The figure below illustrates some differences between seismograms recorded by short-period sensors and strong motion sensors. The first seismogram was recorded by a typical vertical component short-period sensor. This seismogram shows saturation of the signal (clipping it off) due to large ground motions. The next three seismograms are the vertical, north-south, and east-west component of a wide dynamic range accelerometer and are recorded on-scale. This also illustrates how horizontal ground motions can be larger than vertical ground motions.
